Let me start by extending my warmest wishes for a fantastic Holiday Season and a prosperous New Year. As the year draws to a close, I find myself crafting my annual list of New Year's resolutions. Like many others, I know that some of these resolutions won't make it past the stroke of midnight on December 31st. However, one resolution that always remains is the desire to travel. Whether it's discovering hidden gems or returning to beloved destinations, travel is an integral part of my yearly aspirations. If you've never considered travel as a New Year resolution, perhaps this is the year to do so. After all, the essence of this resolution is to focus on personal growth, adventure, and the pursuit of happiness.
Living in South Florida, may not initially seem like a destination where one would think about escaping to the sun and sand. However, in your mind, it's winter, so embracing the warmth and beauty of the sun and sand is only natural. For me, the Caribbean has always held a special allure. It's not just about the sun and sand; it's about the captivating stories of the people who call these islands home. The Caribbean is a tapestry woven with diverse cultures, rich history, cherished traditions, and the welcoming nature of the locals. All of these elements contribute to the irresistible charm of this region.
During a trip to San Juan, I have a vivid recollection of spending the day at the beach and then deciding to rent a car and venture into the rainforest. This particular rainforest is renowned for its exhilarating zip-lining experiences and its connection to nature. As is often the case with my penchant for exploring hidden treasures, we ended up unintentionally arriving at someone's house by the beach to ask for directions. To my astonishment, this family graciously invited anyone who was interested to join them for lunch.
The husband and son of the family would embark on their fishing expedition in the morning, and by midday, the wife and daughters would set up tables along the beach and prepare a delicious meal using freshly caught fish. This experience provided an incredible afternoon, an extraordinary feast, and an enchanting glimpse into the daily life of the locals on the island.
I firmly believe that the most valuable aspect of traveling lies in the memories created, and this extended weekend getaway to San Juan has undoubtedly gifted me with numerous cherished moments.
Thoughts for travel resolutions this winter are:
Jamaica - An enchanting island, offering an exhilarating experience in Kingston with its captivating history and discovering the source of Bob Marley's inspiration. While strolling through the city, you can sense the pulsating rhythm of reggae coursing through your veins, occasionally prompting you to dance joyously in the streets. The locals didn't mock me; they simply smiled, some even joining in, understanding the profound impact the moment had on me. And if that wasn't enough, one of the highlights of my journey was in Negril. This is where the translucent turquoise waters meet the velvety white sands, creating breathtaking scenery. Moreover, there's Rick's Café, where you can savor the most delectable local cuisine and cocktails while witnessing an awe-inspiring sunset. And then there's Ocho Rios, where Dunn's River Falls eagerly awaits you. As you ascend the terraced waterfalls, you'll feel the invigorating mist on your face. It's a moment to cherish, a true paradise found.
Grenada - is an often-overlooked Caribbean destination that is absolutely breathtaking. It is lovingly referred to as the "Spice Isle" because the aroma of nutmeg permeates the air, instantly evoking thoughts of a delightful culinary adventure. Whenever I think of Grenada, my mind is filled with images of their famous national dish, "oil down," a hearty and flavorful one-pot meal. My passion for food truly comes alive when I am on this enchanting island, exploring local restaurants and engaging in conversations with friendly locals to gain insights into their way of life.
During my time in Grenada, I had the pleasure of meeting George, a proud and devoted resident who shared fascinating stories about the island's rich heritage. He guided me through vibrant colonial architecture, bustling marketplaces, and charming parks. On one memorable occasion, George even accompanied me to Grand Etang National Park. As soon as I stepped foot in the park, I was completely immersed in the tranquil beauty of nature, witnessing tropical birds in flight and mischievous monkeys swinging from tree to tree. It was an experience that left me in awe and brought a few joyful giggles.
Exploring the vibrant rainforests and uncovering breathtaking waterfalls leaves me without words as I seek serenity, an ethereal experience. Grenada is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a plethora of thrilling adventures that I can't get enough of.
Curacao - When I wander through the narrow streets of Curacao, I am immediately captivated by the enchanting Dutch colonial architecture and the lively pastel-colored buildings that line the roads. Exploring the Hato Caves and crossing the Queens Emma Bridge, lovingly nicknamed the "Swinging Old Lady" as it opens to allow ships to pass, is an absolute must. However, what truly steals my heart on this island is the water. Spending my days in the crystal-clear warm waters, basking in the sun, is pure bliss. I would order a frozen mudslide and sit by the water's edge, feeling the wind gently caress my hair and the mist from the waves provide a tranquil atmosphere.
Always filled with curiosity, I make it a point to venture beyond the resort each afternoon, opting to walk instead of taking a car service, ensuring that I don't miss a single thing. Discovering unique restaurants that serve only the freshest fish caught each morning and indulging in homestyle barbecues, it's clear that food plays a significant role in my travels. And to top off each night, there's nothing quite like ending the day at Mambo Beach with live music and dancing beneath the starry sky. Curacao has definitely secured a special place on my list of favorite destinations.
I could go on for days talking about the islands of the Caribbean, those I’ve ventured to,
and those I’ve yet to discover. If you’re considering a Winter escape reach out to me, I would enjoy sharing my thoughts and helping arrange some great memories for you.
